Are you “Throwing Out the Baby with the Bath Water? Think back to the last time you changed the oil or coolant (anti-freeze) on RV or tow vehicle. If you’re like most “Do it Yourselfers”, you no doubt drained the old oil or coolant and, like any good citizen who’s doing their best to help the environment, you took the used oil or coolant to your local auto parts store for proper disposal. While you were there, you opened your wallet, pulled out your cash or credit card and purchased replacement oil and coolant. Well, good for you! You showed yourself to be an environmentally conscious person who’s being a good steward of the environment. Unfortunately, you may not have been such a good steward of your hard-earned money. If you’re just changing oils and coolants based on mileage or calendar time and throwing them out, without first having them tested and analyzed, you’re guilty of “Throwing out the baby with the bath water.” What do we mean by that? Well, think about it. If you changed oils and coolants in your RV or tow vehicle based on odometer reading, hour meter reading or calendar time, you missed a great opportunity to find out a lot of valuable information from that used oil or coolant. The proven science of oil and coolant analysis could have alerted you to any problems associated with oil or coolant breakdown or contamination and it would also have shown you if there were any signs of early wearing conditions inside the engine, transmission, gearbox, cooling system, etc. that might have needed your attention or your mechanic’s attention. Plus, if everything would have come back as OK, on your oil or coolant test report, which is often the case, you could have saved a lot of money that was unnecessarily spent on changing the oil or coolant when you didn’t really need to. Our RV inspectors see this all the time. So, next time you’re due for an oil or coolant change, consider testing first to see if the change is even needed and find out if there’s anything going on in the engine, transmission, generator or cooling system that may need your attention or the attention of your mechanic. It’s a great return on investment and protects your RV and tow vehicles against unforeseen breakdowns or failures that can leave you with an expensive repair bill or, worse yet, an add-on towing charge.
